Silverfish & Firebrat Help in King, Pierce & Thurston Counties

A quick silver flash across the floor can leave a lot of questions.

Photos and short videos are welcome by text. They’re helpful, never required.

You may notice one when you turn on a bathroom light, move a storage box or reach for something in a closet. If sightings repeat—or paper and belongings appear damaged—it is worth understanding which insect is present and where it is spending its time.

Call or text Modern Pest Control at 253-414-1987 for a consultation and professional opinion. Tell us where you saw it and whether anything nearby looks affected. A photo or short video is welcome, but optional.

Silverfish: silvery, wingless insects with tapered bodies

Silverfish have long antennae and three tail-like filaments. They can be associated with damp household areas and feed on materials such as starches, paper and paste.

Tell us whether activity is in a bathroom, closet, basement or another area. Include any condensation or leak history without assuming every sighting means hidden water damage.

Firebrats: similar shape, different preferred conditions

Firebrats are often mottled gray or brown and favor very warm places. Areas near heating equipment or hot pipes may be relevant. Their bodies also taper toward three tail-like filaments.

A photo can help distinguish the insects, but the location is useful too. Leave appliance and heating-equipment inspection to the appropriate person.

What damage should you mention?

Paper, book bindings and some fabrics can show irregular surface feeding or holes. Photograph the damage and any insects or shed material nearby rather than assuming a particular pest caused every mark.

Tell us which items matter most to you. A box of family papers may need a different handling plan from replaceable cardboard packaging.

Reduce favorable storage conditions

Keep cardboard off damp concrete floors, address known moisture problems and reduce unnecessary stored paper or debris. Suitable dry belongings can be placed in clean, closed storage.

Start in the area where activity is recurring. You do not need to empty the entire home before calling. Mention ventilation or drainage concerns so the recommendation considers the conditions as well as the insects.

Finding one in the tub does not prove it came through the drain

Silverfish and firebrats can fall into smooth-sided fixtures and be unable to climb out. The location where you discover one may therefore be a trap rather than its entry point.

Look at the pattern around the room and tell us whether sightings also occur by baseboards, storage or nearby pipe openings.

Repeated sightings or damaged belongings deserve a focused assessment

We can discuss identification, the affected areas and what inspection or monitoring would add. Tell us when activity began, whether multiple rooms are involved and any product already used.

Before any service, ask which areas would be addressed, how to protect stored belongings and what preparation or access instructions apply. Mention children and pets, especially if monitoring or treatment is proposed in spaces they use.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Common questions

Does one silverfish mean there is a leak?

No. A single sighting does not diagnose a plumbing or building defect. Repeated activity and known moisture conditions are useful information for an assessment.

Are firebrats and silverfish the same insect?

They are different but similar-looking household pests. Their preferred conditions differ, which is one reason location and identification matter.

Should I throw away books or keepsakes?

Not automatically. Document the evidence and discuss the item before choosing cleaning, storage changes or specialist care. Avoid applying household pesticides to important papers or belongings.

What if I cannot get a clear picture?

Tell us the color, shape, movement and exact room where it appeared. A photo is optional, and a closer inspection may be more useful than repeatedly chasing the insect.
