A few flies through an open door are frustrating. Flies returning every day around a sink, window or food area raise a different question: what is attracting them or allowing them to develop? Different flies need different answers.
Call or text Modern Pest Control at 253-414-1987 for a consultation and professional opinion. Tell us their size, the room involved and whether the numbers changed suddenly. A photo or short video can help, but is optional.
House flies: access and waste sources
House flies can breed in garbage and other suitable waste. Keeping waste contained and screens in good condition helps address both breeding material and entry.
Tell us whether the activity follows an open doorway, waste-storage area or a particular part of the day. Include whether flies are mostly outside or consistently inside.
Blow flies and flesh flies: a sudden increase needs context
Blow flies may have a metallic blue, green or copper appearance; flesh flies are generally gray with dark markings. Both groups can be associated with decaying animal material or waste.
If several appear suddenly, mention any unusual odor, recent animal activity or waste issue. Those details are clues to assess, not proof of a carcass inside a wall.
Fruit or vinegar flies: small flies around fermenting material
Fruit flies use decaying plant material. Overripe produce and overlooked food residues can matter, so removing the visible fruit bowl may not address every source.
Tell us where the flies gather after food is put away and whether activity is near the disposal, recycling or another specific spot.
Drain flies: the organic buildup matters
Drain flies are small and fuzzy-looking, with wings held over the body. Their larvae can develop in wet organic film inside drains.
Finding flies near a sink does not identify the species by itself. Describe the affected fixtures and whether the concern is concentrated in one room. Ask about appropriate source cleaning rather than repeatedly treating the adults.
Phorid flies: small flies that may run in quick bursts
Phorid flies have a humpbacked profile and often make short, jerky movements. Their larvae use moist decaying material in several settings, including waste and some drain-related sources.
Persistent activity can warrant a closer look at the source. Report known leaks or plumbing concerns, but do not assume the presence of one fly establishes a sewer problem.
Cluster flies: seasonal shelter is a different issue
Cluster flies enter buildings for shelter and may gather at windows or ceilings. They do not reproduce inside the structure.
Repeated seasonal activity in an upstairs room can therefore call for a discussion about entry points and sheltering areas. Mention whether the same pattern happened in a previous year.
Useful steps before the consultation
Keep waste closed, address accessible food spills and note damaged screens or doors that are regularly open. For a drain-related concern, identify the fixtures involved and tell us about recent cleaning or plumbing work.
Photograph the insect and its location if practical. Avoid taking apart plumbing or applying products into an opening simply because flies are nearby. Tell us what has already been tried so the recommendation can account for it.
A plan should explain how the source will be addressed
We can discuss identification, inspection priorities and which conditions may need attention. If plumbing, inaccessible decay or a building defect is involved, ask which part belongs with another qualified professional.
For a business, tell us about food handling, operating hours and customer areas. The proposed work should fit the affected space, with preparation and access instructions explained before service.
A LITTLE MORE CLARITY
Common questions
Are all tiny kitchen flies fruit flies?
No. Several small flies can occur indoors. The insect’s appearance and where it develops matter more than the room name.
Why do traps catch flies but the problem continues?
Catching adults can show activity without removing the source producing new flies. Tell us where traps are placed and whether the pattern has changed so the source can be reassessed.
Do flies at a window mean the window is where they entered?
Not necessarily. The place you notice adults does not establish where they developed or how they entered. Share other sightings and any repeating pattern.
What if the flies are around houseplants?
Mention the plants and their watering conditions. Fungus gnats are covered separately and may need a different approach from food- or drain-associated flies.
